A filling is needed when the bacteria in your mouth cause a cavity or a hole in your teeth. Your dentist will “prepare” this cavity by removing all the decay and “filling” it with a filling-material.

There are two main types of material that are used for fillings and those are Composite resins (tooth colored fillings) and Amalgams (silver fillings).

  • It is important to remember that no filling is the best option, when possible. It’s easy to decrease your risk of getting cavities by brushing twice a day, flossing daily, getting regular check-ups and eating a health-balanced diet.
  • However if you do need a filling, both composite and amalgam are great options. Those who prefer a more natural looking filling tend to prefer composite fillings because they blend with the natural color of their teeth. Composite filings tend to cost more than amalgam fillings and are not covered by some insurance plans. Avenue Dental Plan provides discounts on both composite and amalgam fillings.
